Lhasa |

Today we visit the
most famous land mar k of Lhasa, Potala Palace, perched high above
the town on Marpori ( red) mountain, this 13 storied 117 metres
high palace is a mammoth tribute to Tibetan architectural skills
.The name Potala is derived from the Sanskrit word “Potalka”
meaning the abode of the Bodhisttava Avalokitesvara.. Originally
built by King Songtsen Gampo in 7th century, the palace was
destroyed by lightning in 9th century. The fifth Dalai Lama started
construction in 1645, however he died before the Red Palace was
completed. On his death bed he asked his Prime Minister to keep
his death a secret, lest the construction work be held up. The
Prime Minister found a monk who resembled the Dalai Lama and thus
was able to keep the death a secret till the 13th storey was
completed. From the 5th Dalai Lama onwards, Potala Palace became
their official winter residence .The Red palace contains assembly
halls, shrines,35 chapels, four meditation halls and seven
mausoleums contain the embalmed remains of the Dalai Lamas from
5th to 13th ( except the 6th )
Potala was the seat of both religious and political affairs in
Tibet until 1965 when the Chinese invaded Tibet and the present
His Holiness Dalai Lama fled to India and settled in Dharamshala (
Himachal Pradesh ) and is the single most important building in
all Tibet. Overnight in hotel. |
